IINTRODUCTION TO PALLIATIVE/HOSPICE CARE FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS
Course Description: Palliative care is a new specialty in Western medicine that supports a patient’s quality of life at every stage of illness. We know that conscious, compassionate touch cultivates presence and peace in a culture that still pushes vulnerability and mortality away. Massage therapists’ passion for client-centered care and whole-hearted presence uniquely position them to provide integrative palliative care. This includes symptom management, addressing pain on many levels, and reverence for the whole person. It is time now in a changing and challenged health care industry for massage therapists to learn to collaborate in a new model of medicine.
In this introductory weekend, you will learn skills through self-examination, dialogue with Western palliative professionals, and hands-on techniques. This 2-day course is designed to orient you to work, with loving expertise, in an institutionalized medical setting.
Instructors David Lang, LMT, COMT, and Emilie Brough, BSN, DOM, LMT, have together over 55 years of experience in both private practice and in-patient and out-patient adult and pediatric palliative/hospice care and oncology, as well as meditation and mindful movement practices. They worked together at UNM Health Science Center and UNM’s Center for Life. They both have moved on, working in private practices in the integrative medicine community.
